[...] There’s been a great deal of not unwarranted moaning within the specialty coffee industry about Ethiopia’s new Exchange system, and how it hadn’t been set up with allowances for direct trade with farms and how that would essentially make it impossible to get the same high quality coffees that we have been getting used to over the past few years… This morning, I came across an article that states the ECX has responded to these concerns (contrary to some reporting, they never ignored them, they just didn’t deal with the issue…). Anyway, it seems that it’s being corrected for next year… Eleni Gabre-Madhin, chief executive officer of the ECX, said in an interview that the exchange will begin offering a direct buying service to encourage exactly the type of buying we have grown to love. Awesome. Cause I would sorely miss some years without any wet-processed Koratie. [...]

Hello,Since you have now been using the roaster for awhile, I wanted to know what you thought of it because I am thinking of getting one. I understand that there is no cyclone. How is the air flow?-Chuck

Hi Deborah,

Apologies for the delay in replying...

I am very pleased with the roaster I bought. Especially for how little they cost compared to a probat, etc... I have been able to get very good roasts with mine, though it can be a bit tricky, right out of the box, to reproduce the same profile without adding a manometer to the gas line, and a temp probe.. with means a couple hundred dollars on top of the roaster itself. But that it still under other sample roasters.

It's pretty sensitive to ambiet air temp - cold air can stall it. Though I think that is the case with any sampe roaster with an open front end. You really aren't dealing with a large enough mass to be unaffected by a draft of too cold air passing through the roasting drum... Whatever you do, try to place it in a place where its environment is going to change as little as possible.

where are you located, by the way?

hope this helps.

Hi we are a small roaster starting up and are thinking of purchasing one of these Pinhalense single barrel sample roasters. We would appreciate your honest feedback on the quality of this machine, it is much better value for money than anything else on the market.

Thanks Debbie

Many thanks Dave. Yes, the deflector idea makes total sense. It sounds like a piece of sheet metal is indeed in order. Thank you again for the info :)

HI,

That tray came with the roaster. It kinda works but it's really only deep enough for about 100g... more and they get caught at the front hole and either stop dumping in, or spill over the sides. Though it works great if you use it more like a deflector, and pour the beans onto it to load. (Does that make sense?)
One nice thing about it though is that it has a bend in it near the narrow end to help funnel the beans into the drum. You can sort of see it in the third pic...
Anyway, it's bent sheet stainless... I'd bet you could fashion one in an afternoon...

We have a Pinhalense very similar to yours and have been searching for a way to load the greens into the chambers. I noticed the rather excellent loading tray next to your machine and wondered if you could please tell me whether you made it or if it is are available somewhere to purchase? Thanks so much in anticipation. Kindest regards.

Hey Dave, hows it going?
The Qishr sounds like it would make a better potpurri than beverage.
I'd like to check out your roaster sometime and maybe talk about opening a really good coffee shop?
What do you think? Send me an email.
